Mechanics or classics?

What is the difference between mechanical pencils and classic pencils?

The difference in practicality and expediency of using certain pencils. It is impossible for one pencil to be universal for all tasks. Therefore, prepare for a large arsenal of tools!

Do you need clear lines, or a convenient long tip for easy shading? Clarity and precision, or maneuverability with adjustable line width? Let’s figure it out!

A classic pencil in a wooden frame. It is convenient because you can sharpen it however you like. You can use a sharpener or a knife. If you are used to a long sharp tip, then it is better to put the sharpener aside and use a knife.

This type of lead is very convenient to use for both hatching and shading. But keep in mind that this type of lead breaks very easily, so you should not press on it with too much force.

One disadvantage is that with frequent use, such a pencil will quickly become short, which is not very good for the maneuverability of the hand. Therefore, you should purchase a pencil holder that will extend it and make the work process much more comfortable.

Mechanical pencil with replaceable leads. It is very convenient due to its durability.

The main task is to use it carefully and make sure it does not fall.
In the worst case, the pencil mechanism may stop working properly, and the leads will break.

To ensure that the pencil mechanism works for a long time, it is better to choose a high-quality model from a trusted brand.
This could be a brand such as FABER CASTLE or ROTRING.

On the downside, if you need different line widths (lead), you will need to purchase several pencils with different lead diameters (for example, 0.3/0.5/0.7/1).

This is a profitable investment in materials if you work with drawings on a regular basis, as such pencils can last from 5 to 10 years with proper care and use.

Should you switch to mechanical pencils, or stick with the classic wooden ones? It’s totally up to you. I’d suggest mixing different types of pencils, because together they can give you more versatile skills when you’re working on exercises.
